Gamal Abinsaid

Ashoka Changemaker

Founder, Garbage Clinical Insurance

Gamal Abinsaid is a young doctor who was inspired to set up the micro-insurance program which empowers people to take an active role in managing their waste and improving their sanitation. Gamal set up Garbage Clinical Insurance to help communities in need to collect their household waste and exchange it with health services. After processing, a month worth of garbage can cover healthcare programs and clinical services for the community, providing families with access to doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, dentists and health volunteers.

Up to now, Garbage Clinical Insurance (GCI) has recruited 88 volunteers, 15 doctors and 12 nurses, all of whom are paid with garbage from the community. This initiative has helped more than 2,000 people in Indonesia gain access to medical support.

For this initiative, Gamal has won various award, among which Ashoka Young Changemakers, Changemakers Unilever Sustainable Young Entrepreneur Award, Inspiring Scientific Award from Research and Technological Minister of Indonesia, AusAID Indonesian Social Innovator Award, and many more. With his organization, Indonesia Medika, Gamal is spreading this idea to all over Indonesia.
