Panel Discussion: Animating Our Public Spaces

Public spaces create the stage for informal public performance, street festivals, intelligent lighting, and large-scale public art works. These organic gatherings make a critical difference to the character of public spaces and the emotional resonance they have for visitors and locals alike, how people move and gather. Unfortunately, much of the public space we see in today’s biggest cities is made up of the leftover space within the built urban fabric.

What are contemporary strategies to create space for citizens? Are the best examples of public space built or organic? What will the future public square look like? What are the lessons to be learned from the successful animation and humanization of our public spaces? How do we design our public spaces with sensitivity to these potentialities?
